Cultural Customs that are Unique
Unique Customs*Cheese rolling is an event that takes place in several parts of Britain usually on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday. A round cheese is rolled down a hill and chased by people who are all trying to be the first to grab the cheese. It is believed that the custom began as a way for villagers to gain grazing rights on the hill that the cheese was being rolled down. Some believe that eating of the cheese protects your fertility.
*The Spanish definitely have their share of unique traditions and La Tomatina in Valencia has to be one of the most interesting. Each year on the last Wednesday in August the town comes to live with revelers throwing tomatoes at one another. No one really knows how the tradition came about but people come from around the globe to participate in this mega food fight.
*The United States is a cultural melting pot and celebrates customs and traditions from around the globe. One unusual tradition stands out as purely American. Groundhog Day is February 2 when the country turns to a small groundhog in Philadelphia to see if he will spot his shadow. A shadow free experience means spring is just around the corner but if Phil the Groundhog sees his shadow then it is six more weeks of winter. Look around where ever you are and you are likely to uncover a unique and often strange custom specific to that region. The most unusual custom is the one that is new and different to you.
